Welcome to QuicKeys™! QuicKeys is CE Software’s new keyboard enhancer software. We’ve put together a limited version of the QuicKeys program that you can try in the comfort of your own Mac.
To use QuicKeys, you must be using a Mac 512E, Plus, SE, or II (you cannot use a Mac 128, 512, or XL) and you must be running under System 4.1. Copy the DemoQuicKeys icon into your system folder and reboot. That’s all it takes to install QuicKeys.
To define the actions that QuicKeys will perform, just open the control panel and click on the DemoQuicKeys icon. In this demonstration version, you’ll have to redefine any keys whenever you reboot. (The real version, of course, automatically remembers your commands from boot to boot.)
When you look at the QuicKeys window, just click on the word “Define” in our miniature menu bar. A menu will pop up, ready for you to make selections. You make a selection from this popup menu, perhaps make some more choices in a dialog box (depending upon what sort of action you’re defining), then just press the key you want to assign to the choice. When you close the control panel, the key will now be active.
Explore the various types of commands you can create. Start with setting up a few File keys, see how you can set up a key to quickly jump from one program to another. Try defining a few desk accessories from the “Menu/DA” selection, see how nice it is to have your most often-used utilities just the press of a key away. If you’re feeling adventurous, try some clicks and sequences. Don’t worry if some of the choices seem a bit confusing--QuicKeys is a program you can grow into, getting a lot of use at each level. (And, of course, QuicKeys comes with a full manual describing every choice in complete detail.)
This demonstration is limited to a maximum of 12 keys. The full version of QuicKeys allows you to assign up to 100 keys that can be used at all times, and an additional 100 keys for every program you own. These “application-specific” keysets ONLY take effect when you are in the program you wrote them for.
As always, CE Software has included several bonuses in the QuicKeys package. You’ll also get Quick Access, which allows you to edit your keys and print them out in a variety of forms, and DialogKeys, a utility giving you keyboard control over dialog boxes. QuicKeys is compatible with all Macintosh keyboards, including those from DataDesk and Tangent Technologies. (DataDesk and Tangent Technologies require a special INIT file, supplied by us on the QuicKeys disk, for full compatibility.)
QuicKeys retails for $99.95 and is available from local retailers or direct from CE Software.
